Gemma Arterton has signed up to star in 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters'.

The former Bond girl will appear alongside Jeremy Renner in the dark action movie, which tells the story of the fairytale siblings 10 years after their traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters.

Gemma will play Gretel while Jeremy - who has been attached to the project for some time - will take on the role of Hansel.

Gemma beat off competition from Diane Kruger, Eva Green and Noomi Rapace to win the role and director Tommy Wirkola is hoping to begin shooting the project in Berlin on March 7.

Tommy is keen to start filming then as Jeremy Renner is committed to shoot his role in 'The Avengers' just eight weeks after he does 'Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol', so it needs to be fitted in then.

In the children's book Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister threatened by a cannibalistic witch living deep in the forest in a house made of gingerbread and she tries to kill them and cook them. However, they manage to save their lives by outwitting her.
