Glee star Alex Newell has landed a record deal and has started work on his debut album.

The actor was cast on the hit U.S. Tv series after competing on U.S. reality show The Glee Project in 2011.

He initially signed on for two episodes, but became a series regular in 2013.

Newell has signed with Glee executive music producer Adam Anders' record label, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He says, "I am thrilled to join this new family and take another step in my career. Singing is my passion and to now have the opportunity to make my own music is a dream come true! I can't thank... (everyone) enough for welcoming me with open arms."

Newell plays cross-dressing, gender-bending Wade 'Unique' Adams on the show.
