You'd think that Gotye would be grateful that Glee covered his hit song 'Somebody That I Used To Know.' After all, the week after they used it in the show, the song shot to the top of the Billboard chart (aided of course by an appearance on Saturday Night Live - we can't let Glee take all of the credit). The Belgian-born Australian songwriter told CNN that he wasn't that impressed with the TV show's version of the song, though.
"They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals, but the vocals were that pop 'Glee style,' ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned." The song was a hit in Australia before it went viral and became a hit in the UK and US, so he's been promoting it for a long time. "`Talking about myself all day as I have been for the last nine months gets pretty boring, saying the same things, in subtle variations.. I haven't taken the step of just making stuff up but that might be next, I think." Talking about the success of the song, he said "when it hit a million views on YouTube, I kinda knew that something crazy was happening with it.
Kimbra, who features on the song, explains why she thinks the track was such a success. "I think there's an extraordinary vulnerability to the song 'Somebody That I Used To Know,' it's very honest. the first time that I heard it, I knew that it would connect with people."
