Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong won over theatre critics with his debut in the band's AMERICAN IDIOT musical, after rocking out Broadway on Tuesday night (28Sep10).
The singer has signed on to play St. Jimmy onstage in American Idiot for a week, filling in for stage veteran Tony Vincent, who is on short leave for a family matter.
Armstrong's performance in the show, which he co-wrote with Michael Mayer and debuted in the Big Apple last April (10), marks the star's Broadway debut - and his first foray into acting.
And he impressed theatre critics with rocking renditions of his own songs Homecoming, She’s a Rebel, Last Night on Earth, and Know Your Enemy, that made the Broadway crowd roar.
A reviewer from MTV.com writes, "On any normal night, the energy in the St. James Theatre during a performance of American Idiot is pretty high, simply because of the nature of the music and the on-stage spectacle. But people were especially amped last night."
A critic from RollingStone.com adds, "The 38-year-old fell naturally into the flow of the choreography, and of course, he gave inimitable, passionate performances of his own songs."
After the full-cast bow, the curtain re-opened with actors clutching acoustic guitars, as the rocker sang the first verse of Green Day hit Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - he then left the rest of the actors to trade lines.
The Rolling Stone writer continues, "He was respectful of the role, and seemingly intent on not overshadowing the cast - he never broke character or sang numbers outside of his role. Still, he brought 20 years of stage experience to the role."
Armstrong will perform in American Idiot until 3 October (10) when he will rejoin Green Day for the band's South American tour.
Vincent’s understudies, Joshua Kobak and Andrew Call, will cover the role from 5 October (10).
