The Oscar winner is known for sharing recipes using pricey ingredients on her Goop.com blog, but she will attempt to cut back to just $1.38 (£0.86) per meal - the average cost for those living on America's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - as part of the #FoodBankNYCChallenge campaign, which aims to highlight the impact proposed cuts to the programme will have on those in need.

The actress was sponsored by her pal, celebrity chef Mario Batali, and Paltrow took to Twitter.com on Thursday (09Apr15) to show off what she bought for the $29 (£18.13) allotted for all of her meals for the week, revealing she will be living off a carton of eggs, seven limes, a package of tortillas, frozen peas, one ear of corn, one avocado, and one tomato.

In the accompanying caption, she wrote, "This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store - what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week".

She also shared another post encouraging fans to donate to the Food Bank of New York City, while nominating Los Angeles chef Roy Choi to take up the challenge too.

Batali had also challenged rockers Sting and Debbie Harry to take on the task.
