Director Harmony Korine struggled through constant fan interruptions while filming Spring Breakers after finding devotees of James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens hiding in unlikely locations just to get close to the stars.

The moviemaker admits he never expected to contend with the large crowds which gathered around the set in St. Petersburg, Florida each day and their presence made it more challenging to complete the shoot.

He tells the New York Post, "It was insane. It was one of the most difficult filming experiences I've ever had. I wasn't used to working with people who had that much chaos and fanaticism follow them."

Korine was even more ill prepared for the sneaky tricks fans would employ to try and catch the young Hollywood stars in action, with one couple setting up camp in the ceiling of a hotel for 48 hours before they were caught and kicked out.

He says, "They had brought food and wine. They were trying to film a sequence through the cracks in the floorboards. The only way we figured it out was that we smelled menthol cigarettes coming up from the floorboards."
