One Direction have revealed they ''chatted up'' Rihanna at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The boy band - consisting of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson - were happy to find out they were sitting behind the 'Diamonds' hitmaker for the ceremony and couldn't help but flirt a little with the singer.

Writing in their new book 'Who We Are', Niall recalled: ''We were at the VMAs and Rihanna was sitting in front of us. 'Louis!' I said, 'Look, there's Rihanna!' I was well impressed by that and we ended up chatting her up a bit.''

Meanwhile, One Direction revealed they had a ''great experience'' when they went over to perform at Johnny Depp's house for his children, Lily-Rose, 15, and 12-year-old Jack.

The 'Transcendance' star was unable to take the children - who he has with former partner Vanessa Paradis - to one of band's shows after injuring himself so he asked if they could do a little set for his kids in his home.

Louis shared: ''We'd heard [Johnny Depp's] kids were fans of the band, which was cool.

''Originally he was going to come down to a show with his family, but he had an injury of some kind and was on crutches, so he said, 'I can't make it. So why don't you come down to my house and meet the kids?' We were like 'Er, OK. Let's all pile round Johnny Depp's house. Great!'

''So we did, and that was a great experience.''
