Hugh Jackman's child abduction drama Prisoners has captivated U.S. moviegoers and shot to the top of the box office.

The film, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Terrence Howard and Viola Davis, easily won the race for the weekend film cash, taking $21.4 million (£14.2 million) following its release on Friday (20Sep13), according to studio estimates.

The film is Jackman's second U.S. box office number one for the year - The Wolverine debuted at the top in July (13).

Last week's top film, Insidious Chapter 2, drops to second place with $14.5 million (£9.6 million), and Robert De Niro's comedy The Family debuts at three with $7 million (£4.6 million), ahead of Spanish-language family comedy Instructions Not Included.

And there's a return to the top 10 for The Wizard of Oz thanks to the release of the film classic's 3D Imax version, which hit cinemas on Friday - the film scores the ninth spot on the box office countdown with takings of $3 million (£2 million).
