Hugh Jackman will star in 'Apostle Paul'.

The 46-year-old actor is set to join the cast of the religious drama, which tells the story of the Christian persecutor Saul of Tarsus, who is struck by heavenly lightening while travelling to Damascus and ordered by Jesus to change his ways.

The biblical tale sees Saul become one of Christianity's main apostles, Paul, and write 14 books for the New Testament.

While further cast details are yet to be announced, the movie already has a star-studded line up behind the camera with Jackman joining Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to produce, reports Deadline.

The movie's screenplay is being written by Matt Cook, with Jennifer Todd and Chris Clarke also joining the producing team.

Meanwhile, Jackman - who is famed for playing comic book superhero Wolverine in the 'X-Men' franchise and the solo spin off movies - recently hinted he will portray the character for the last time when Wolverine 3 comes out in 2017.

The star took to his Instagram account to share a photograph of his hands featuring Wolverine's metal claws which he captioned: ''WOLVERINE ...ONE LAST TIME. HJ''
