Sci-fi comedy movie THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY has stunned Hollywood by grossing $21.7 million (GBP11.4 million) in its opening weekend to lead the newly-released US box office chart.

Action movie XXX: STATE OF THE UNION was expected to debut at number one, but the Ice Cube film took in a disappointing $13.7 million (GBP7.2 million) to come in third behind last week's chart-topper The Interpreter.

But, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, the movie adaptation of DOUGLAS ADAMS' hit book and spin-off BBC TV series, was the weekend's big winner, with reports of some audiences giving the comedy, starring Mos Def and MARTIN FREEMAN, a standing ovation.
