Charlie Hunnam is reportedly set to star in 'American Drug Lord'.

The 'Sons of Anarchy' actor is reportedly set to play cartel leader Edgar Valdez in the upcoming film based on a 2011 Rolling Stone article of the same name, by Vanessa Grigoriadis and Mary Cuddehe

The story follows high school football player Valdez, a Mexican/American born and raised in Laredo, Texas, who became the first US citizen to lead his own drug cartel and the movie tells his story moving narcotics from his base in Acapulco.

'American Sniper' writer Jason Hall is to pen the script and is writing the character for Hunnam to portray, reports Deadline.

Sarah Esberg of Plan B will executive produce the movie, with Jillian Share and Sophie Sikora are supervising for Legendary.

Hunnam - who previously starred in the sci-fi adventure 'Pacific Rim', directed by Guillermo del Toro - is also set to take on the lead role in Guy Ritchie's upcoming blockbuster 'Knights Of The Round Table: King Arthur'.

He may be reunited with his 'Pacific Rim' co-star Idris Elba, who is up for the part of Merlin.

It is believed Warner Bros. is hoping to create a franchise that will last for six planned films.
