Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd is hoping to achieve international stardom with big-budget movie KING ARTHUR - after his American TV show was axed following four episodes.

The 102 DALMATIANS star, 30, will have to rely on his role as SIR LANCELOT alongside Keira Knightley to propel him to international recognition after the futuristic drama CENTURY CITY, in which he played an idealistic lawyer, was pulled by the CBS network.

Critics deemed the show "silly" and "dullsville", while audiences favoured AMERICAN IDOL - which was aired on another channel during the same primetime slot.

A source comments, "Ioan was hailed as the new George Clooney when he landed the role.

"It's a huge shame but he'll bounce back."
