Irvin Kershner - the director of iconic 'Star Wars' movie 'The Empire Strikes Back' - has died at the age of 87 following a long battle with illness.
'The Empire Strikes Back' director Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87.
He began his career as a film teacher at the University of Southern California but moved into movies as a photographer and director.
In later life he also made guest appearances in films including 'The Last Temptation of Christ' by Martin Scorsese.
He was believed to be working on a number of movies at the time of his death.
