Jarvis Cocker has been confirmed as one of the guest editors of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

The former Pulp frontman will use the programme to discuss financial issues and the complications that have arisen from the credit crunch.

Programme editor Ceri Thomas said the guest editor slots are one of the best features of the flagship show.

She said: "They think of things that wouldn't normally occur to us; they take us places we wouldn't ordinarily go."

"I think this year's group is the most fascinating we've ever worked with."

Other musical guest who have stepped in to the programme's editor role have included U2 frontman Bono and Damon Albarn.

Novelist Zadie Smith, head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor and architect Zaha Hadid are also scheduled as guest editors this year.

Elsewhere, Jarvis recently combined lectures with his live performance as part of the 13th anniversary of Rough Trade Records.
