French film maker PHILLIPE DE BROCA has died from cancer. He was 71.

The LE BOSSU director cemented his position as a legend of French cinema with a series of comedies starring Jean-Paul Belmondo in the 1960s.

De Broca began his film career over fifty years ago as an assistant to director FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT.

French President JACQUES CHIRAC paid tribute to De Broca yesterday (27NOV04), saying, "French cinema has lost one of its most talented contributors."

De Broca's most recent film, an adaptation of a HERVE BAZIN novel, was VIPERE AU POING (VIPER IN THE FIST). It was released in France and Belgium last month (06OCT04) and has so far been watched by over a million cinema-goers.
