Jennifer Lopez is to be sued for $40 million over a cancelled performance.

The Cratos Premium hotel and casino complex in Cyprus have launched legal action after the star pulled out of a planned show on her 41st birthday on July 24 - which also marked 36 years since the island was invaded by Turkey.

It is believed the legal proceedings will be dropped if the singer and dancer agrees to the scheduled performance.

Chief executive of the hotel Murat Bozoglu said: "The contract has not been terminated. If she does not show up for the concert, we will begin a procedure in the courts to claim 35-40 million dollars in damages. The cancellation....is not covered by any clause in the contract she signed with us."

Jennifer pulled out of the show after several internet campaigns were launched against the concert, arguing that her appearance would be glorifying the actions of Turkey.

Her spokesperson said: "Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse.

"After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region."
