Jennifer Saunders - Jennifer Saunders Blasts Sympathy-seeking Cancer Survivors
British comedienne Jennifer Saunders has slammed cancer survivors who still expect sympathy after receiving the all-clear, insisting they are simply attention-seeking.
The Absolutely Fabulous star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, drew some criticism when she declared herself "free of cancer", with several survivors of the disease insisting she had spoken too soon.
Saunders, who went into remission in 2010, insists some former sufferers are reluctant to relinquish the attention they gained from those around them while battling the illness, and she is adamant she will not behave that way.
Saunders tells Britain's The Times newspaper, "People were writing, 'How dare you say that! You're never free of cancer!' And I thought, 'No, actually I am free of cancer now'."
Asked if she thought some sufferers 'want to keep wearing cancer like a badge', she replies, "For ever - and I'll give you why. Because it is the job you don't have to work for. You suddenly get so much attention, and if you're not used to that, I bet it can sway you a little bit. I'm used to it! My job gives me the attention I would otherwise crave. They must be so p***ed off when their hair grows back."
