Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given fans of Tom Cruise's classic 1986 movie Top Gun a lift by vowing to go ahead with plans for a sequel despite the death of the original film's director Tony Scott.

Bosses at Paramount Pictures originally approached Scott and Bruckheimer with a view to developing Top Gun 2 in 2010, and the moviemaker even teamed up with Cruise to begin scouting potential filming locations for the project in Fallon, Nevada.

However, the project was put on hold last summer (Aug12) when the celebrated director jumped to his death from a bridge in California.

Executives at Paramount appeared ready to shelve the movie out of respect for Scott's legacy, but Bruckheimer has now spoken out to renew his promise to complete the highly-anticipated follow-up.

The producer insists Cruise, who shot to stardom as the film's hot-headed fighter pilot star Maverick, is also still keen to move forward with the plans.

Speaking at the Produced By conference in Los Angeles on Sunday (09Jun13), Bruckheimer says, "For 30 years we've been trying to make a sequel and we're not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom (Cruise) and Paramount are still interested in making it. What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick. It's something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we'll get it made."
