Late rocker Jerry Garcia's iconic Travis Bean Tb500 electric guitar has been snapped up at auction for $238,700 (£159,130).

The Grateful Dead star played the model while recording 1977's Terrapin Station and used it at over 90 concerts with the jam band in the late 1970s.

It was estimated to go under the hammer for between $150,000 (£100,000) and $200,000 (£133,330) during the Julien's Auctions' Icons & Idols: Rock 'n' Roll sale at the weekend (06-07Dec13), but it exceeded expectations with a final bid of $238,700 (£159,130).

A Hofner bass custom made for Sir Paul MCCartney in 1964 was another big earner, going for $201,800 (£134,530), while other attractions at the Beverly Hills, California event included Elvis Presley's white 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine, which sold for $96,000 (£64,000), and a pair of blue suede shoes The King owned after achieving success with his 1956 hit Blue Suede Shoes, which sold for $76,800 (£51,200).

Meanwhile, a red lame jacket worn by Michael Jackson during his Victory Tour went for $83,200 (£55,470) and an embroidered vest worn by the legendary Jimi Hendrix scored a top bid of $53,125 (£35,420).
