Zombies have ended Jesus Christ's reign at the top of America's box office as the remake of classic horror film Dawn of the Dead crashes in at number one.

The movie, starring Ving Rhames and Mekhi Pfifer, made an impressive $27.3 million (GBP15.1 million) in its opening weekend, according to Sunday (21MAR04) estimates - $8 million more than Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ, which has now made a staggering $295.3 million (GBP164 million) in America in its first four weeks on release.

Angelina Jolie's new thriller Taking Lives also had a good first weekend, coming in at number three with $11.4 million (GBP6.3 million), while Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet's quirky movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind failed to impress cinema goers - it made just $8.5 million (GBP4.7 million).
