Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will return for a sequel to the classic 90's comedy Dumb and Dumber, according to original co-director Peter Farrelly. The filmmaker confirmed the news to ComingSoon.net, adding, "We're getting set to shoot Dumb And Dumber 2 in September. It's the first sequel we've ever done."

Dumb and Dumber already spawned the prequel 'Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd', but the movie didn't star either Carrey or Daniels and has been largely forgotten by fans of the original. Farrelly had hinted at a "proper" sequel last year while at a press junket in Sydney, adding, "[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they'll be able to quote lines from that - lines that I've long forgotten". His brother Bobby Farrelly later spoke to Moviehole about the potential of a second film, saying, "If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel - and that ball is in motion. We're starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we'll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel". With both lead stars on-board, it's likely that the film will match Farrelly's vision and follow Harry and Lloyd in later life. Though a sequel seemed unlikely several years ago, a series of underwhelming movies from Carrey has probably enticed to Hollywood star to revisit one of his most successful characters in Lloyd Christmas. Daniels meanwhile has also worked regularly since the original movie, especially in some well-received indie-dramas, though he looks to have been persuaded that Dumb and Dumber 2 is worth making.

With shooting starting in September, it's likely that Dumb and Dumber 2 could hit cinemas in the summer of 2013.
