Fashion icon John Galliano has told a French court he has "no recollection" of hurling anti-Semitic remarks at a couple during a night out in Paris, France in February (11).
The disgraced designer was arrested over allegations he became embroiled in a bust-up at a Parisian bar and he was subsequently sacked from his job as head designer at Christian Dior.
Galliano's trial began in the French capital on Wednesday (22Jun11), and court papers detailing the incident reveal the flamboyant designer was drinking at the La Perle bar in the city's Marais district when staff asked museum curator Geraldine Bloch and her partner, Philippe Virgitti, to move seats. When Bloch refused, Galliano launched into a 45-minute tirade of abuse, allegedly calling her a "f**king ugly Jewish b**ch".
He then turned on Virgitti when he tried to intervene, allegedly calling him "a dirty Asian s**t" and a "f**king Asian b**tard", and implying the Frenchman was an "illegal immigrant". He also allegedly told Bloch she had "revolting eyebrows, low-end boots and low-end thighs", and he was so abusive Virgitti threatened to hit him over the head with a chair.
The designer is facing a potential six-month jail sentence over the incident, and the papers also reveal he blames his drink demons and his use of anti-depressants for the outburst.
He told the court on Wednesday he has "no recollection" of hurling insults at the couple.
Speaking outside court ahead of the hearing, Galliano's lawyer Aurelien Hamelle told reporters, "He is cured, he has had treatment. He will explain the state he was in... He's treating his addiction to alcohol and medication... He has had two months of treatment in the United States. He will offer an apology and seek forgiveness."
Bloch is seeking symbolic damages of $1.40 (86p).
