The estate of late TV legend Johnny Carson has donated $5 million (GBP2.8 million) to his former university.

The money will be used to create the Johnny Carson Fund for Theater, Film and Broadcasting, the annual income of which will go towards supporting the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Theater arts and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The new donation means more than $11 million (GBP6.1 million) has been donated by former TONIGHT SHOW Carson's to the university.

Carson died in January (05) at the age of 79.
