LATEST: Johnny Depp has been formally offered the role of candy-man WILLY WONKA by film director Tim Burton.

Rumours had been rife that the Pirates Of The Caribbean: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL star was the hot favourite to take the lead role of the eccentric candy maker in Burton's new version of kids' classic CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

And according to American industry publication VARIETY, Depp is now poised to accept the role, which would be his third outing with maverick Burton since 1990's Edward Scissorhands.

The only problem could be Depp's success in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which may lead to his agents requesting more money than Burton's budget can afford.
