Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the Golden Globe-winning Irish actor, was taken to hospital on Tuesday (28th June 2011) after being found "slumped" at his home in central London. Early indications suggested a suicide attempt, but Meyers is thought to have relapsed into an alcohol binge.
A source close to the actor who spoke with US Weekly said, "It was not a suicide attempt. He did relapse and was hospitalized for that, but was released". The 'Tudors' star has struggled with alcohol problems in recent years and only recently completed a stint in rehabilitation. A representative for Scotland Yard confirmed the incident to the UK's Sun newspaper, saying, "Officers were called by London Ambulance Service following reports of a man refusing treatment. The man was taken to hospital". Rhys-Meyers was allegedly spotted leaving the hospital himself, but offered no comment. After initially refusing the help of medical staff, the actor was taken to hospital "for his own safety". He has been dating the heiress Reena Hammer for seven years, although recent speculation has suggested their relationship has ended.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers earned a Golden Globe in 2006 for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the biographical miniseries 'Elvis'. He recently completed filming the forthcoming drama movie 'Albert Nobbs', with Mia Wasikowska and AARON JOHNSON.
