James Franco has admitted he's gay in his ''art.''

The 36-year-old actor - whose sexuality has been the centre of speculation for many years - has finally cleared up the rumours surrounding his personal life during an interview with himself for the March issue of Four Two Nine magazine.

Speaking to himself, James asked: ''Are you f***ing gay or what?''

To which he replied: ''Well, I like to think that I'm gay in my art and straight in my life. Although, I'm also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I'm straight.

''So I guess it depends on how you define gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I'm straight.

''In the twenties and thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with.

''Sailors would f*** guys all the time, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren't considered gay.''

Meanwhile, the 'Interview' star recently admitted he tries not to use

social media because he thinks it's ''frivolous'' but understands that Twitter - on which he has over three million followers - is a ''serious'' outlet for him in regards to his work and financial gains.

When asked if he expresses his true personality via social media, he said: ''No. It's always felt frivolous to me, meaning I think I have a silly attitude, generally speaking, when I post things. I don't take it that seriously. On the other hand, it is very serious because one of the main currencies of our age is attention, and so that little number that says how many people are following me actually equates into money, and a certain type of power.''
