The pop star's latest big screen outing, which also features the voices of Jennifer Lopez and Jim Parsons, took $9.6 million (£6 million) in ticket sales over the weekend (20-22Mar15), beating new sci-fi adventure Insurgent by a landslide.

The second film in the Divergent franchise, starring Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, took $4.7 million (£2.9 million) in its opening weekend, pushing previous chart-topper The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel into third place with $1.1 million (£671,088).

Will Smith's Focus landed in fourth with $784,507 (£490,317) and Sean Penn's The Gunman got off to a slow start with takings of $649,494 (£405,934).
