It is becoming "increasingly likely" that Katie Couric will depart the CBS Evening News when her contract expires on June 4 and launch a syndicated talk show that would debut in 2012, Broadcasting & Cable magazine reported today (Tuesday), citing sources close to Couric. The trade publication said that Couric and her advisors believe that in order for the show to become established during the 2012 election year, it is important for her to exit now. Other news reports have suggested that CBS may be prepared to offer her a two-year extension of her current contract so that they would have her services through the elections. According to B&C , Couric is being advised by Ed Wilson, founder and former president of NBC Domestic Television Distribution -- the network's syndication unit -- and former NBC chief Jeff Zucker, whom she has known for more than 20 years when he produced the Today show, which she co-hosted. Meanwhile, today's New York Post reported that Couric has met with ABC's new news chief, Ben Sherwood. In its report, the newspaper commented "The fact that Couric is talking to others indicates that odds of her re-upping as CBS anchor are slim."
