Singer Kelly Clarkson has backed a campaign calling for the overhaul of animal care centres in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Since U Been Gone hitmaker wants fans to sign a petition demanding reform at the Metro Animal Care and Control in her adopted hometown.

Nashville citizens are urging Mayor Karl Dean to do more to reduce the current 76 per cent animal euthanisation rate by starting up better rescue and volunteer programs.

Clarkson shared a link to the virtual petition on her Twitter.com page, writing, "Nashville, please help! Let's show other cities how we are not only progressive but compassionate!"
