Kendrick Lamar has been named Hottest MC in the Game by MTV.

The Californian rapper beat artists including Kayne West and Drake to take the the top spot in the channel's eighth annual poll.

Kendrick has previously said he's glad he didn't listen to people who advised him to quit at the start of his career.

He has said: ''They never said I wasn't talented enough they said something like, 'The industry is shady, you don't need to be doing this.'

''I respect their opinions but at the end of the day I had to follow my heart and that's what I wanted to do.''

Kendrick's second album, 'good kid, m.A.A.d city', boasted collaborations with Lady GaGa, Drake and Dr. Dre, and was a surprise hit, being certified Gold in the US.

He has said he writes every day, but isn't ready to make a follow up album yet, saying: ''I write every day. I have new ideas all the time but I mean going to the studio and locking in and making the next album. I don't want to force things, I still want to live in the moment.''

Also named in the top five on MTV's hottest MCs list were 2 Chains, Rick Ross and Nas. When places five to ten were released earlier this week Kanye West expressed his dissatisfaction with only being placed seventh.
