Kevin Spacey was overcome with emotion when director Sam Mendes paid tribute to him on the closing night of their production of Richard III in New York.
Spacey, who is artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre in London, recently transferred his production of the Shakespearean play to a theatre in Brooklyn after an international run as part of a joint project with the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
The production's final show took place on Sunday (04Mar12) and the cast held a closing party at the River Cafe in Brooklyn to mark the occasion.
The show's director Mendes, who is currently shooting the new Bond movie in London, filed a video tribute to thank Spacey and the rest of the cast for their hard work, and the filmmaker's kind words moved the actor to tears, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.
In his own speech, Spacey called the role "life-altering... one that will inform everything else I ever do," and he also paid tribute to his colleagues in a post on Twitter.com.
He writes, "Final perf (performance) of Richard Iii just done. What an amazing 10 months with the best company who are a joy to work with. I will miss them all! Love!"
