David Beckham has joked that he can't afford to retire because he has to keep his baby daughter in designer clothes.

The 37-year-old star - who is worth around £160million - said he would like to work less but 11-month-old Harper has the same expensive tastes as mother Victoria Beckham.

He told 'The Today Show': ''[I'm] totally [wrapped around her finger]. The moment she was born, I think me and the boys, we were all done. ''Her wardrobe is unbelievable. It's amazing. I think that's why I have to keep playing!''

He recently re-signed with La Galaxy for two years, but took a 40 per cent pay cut to just over £2.5million a year.

The couple who are based in California have three other children; Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.

David also reiterated his desire to play for Great Britain's football team at the London Olympics and said he ignores critics who say that he would only get picked because of his celebrity status.

He revealed: ''I don't really take too much interest in those kinds of comments. But I have said that I felt that those comments are disrespectful, because I've had kind of a successful career with what I do.''
