Lady GaGa became hooked on marijuana to block out the pain from her broken hip.
The 'Applause' hitmaker admits she was ''smoking 15 joints a day'' after suffering a tear and breakage inside the joint, which forced her to cancel the remaining dates on her 'Born This Way Ball' world tour following corrective surgery in February.
Speaking in the new issue of Attitude magazine, she said: ''It was a habit that eventually occurred when the pain got so bad with the hip.
''I was just numbing, numbing, numbing myself then sleeping it off, then getting on stage, killing it in pain, then getting off and smoking, smoking, smoking, not knowing what the pain was.
''F*** if I know what hurts the most, you know? I would break the habit and it would sneak back in and I would break it and sneak back in.''
The 27-year-old singer believes the sexual pressures of fame also prompted her to turn to the illegal substance.
She explained: ''I went through terrible experiences early in my career climbing through swine and swine of men in the music industry -- just trying to get somebody to listen to my music and take me seriously as a songwriter instead of trying to get me to b*** them.''
However, despite going through Marina Abramović's intense rehab session - which required Gaga to starve herself for three days and find her way out of the woods blindfolded - earlier this year, she admits she still smokes the drug occasionally.
She said: ''Now I smoke a little bit at night just, you know, for fun. But not to cope -- that's the difference. I'm the soberest I've ever been in the past five years.''
