The Oscar nominations 2012 will be announced by The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence in Los Angeles on Tuesday (January 24, 2012), with silent French flick The Artist expected to be one of the leading films. The movie directed by Michel Hazanavicius and starring Jean Dujardin won the top honor at the Producers Guild Awards over the weekend.
So who else will get the nod when Lawrence reads out the nominees tomorrow? As for the Best Picture category, 'The Descendants', 'The Help' and Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris' are all likely to be on the list, as is Steven Spielberg's War Horse, which is deemed to be hugely 'Oscar friendly'. Elsewhere, Meryl Streep should receive a nod for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', though it's the Best Actor category that's shaping up to be the most intriguing. Clooney, Dujardin, Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio should all find themselves nominated tomorrow, each of whom will be in with decent chances of winning come February. Just as The King's Speech dominated last year's ceremony, it could be The Artist that sweeps the board if handed enough nominations on Tuesday. Speaking at the Producers Guild Awards, the movie's producer Thomas Langmann said, "When Michel Hazanavicius and I dreamed of making The Artist, we knew we were dreaming of writing a love letter to American cinema. We never knew in return we would get a taste of the American dream".
Meanwhile, the anti-Oscars ceremony The Razzies will this year hold its ceremony on April Fools' Day (April 1, 2012). Last year's gongs went to M Night Shyamalan who scooped Worst Picture (The Last Airbender) and Worst Director, while Ashton Kutcher and Sarah Jessica Parker scooped Worst Actor and Worst Actress.
