Polish movie mogul Lew Rywin, who co-produced Schindler's List and The Pianist, has had his conviction on bribery charges upheld by Poland's supreme court, ending a gruelling three-year case which toppled the country's former Prime Minister.

Last year (04) Rywin was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for bribery. A Warsaw court convicted the producer for soliciting a bribe of $17 million (GBP9.7 million) from a newspaper editor in return for promoting changes to Polish media law.

Rywin, who was also fined $30,000 (GBP16,700) told the editor he was acting on behalf of senior politicians including then-prime minister LESZEK MILLER.

The 59-year-old promised to lobby for a change in law that would allow the newspaper's parent company to buy a television station - but the conversation was secretly recorded and the editor approached the police.

The scandal, one of a string to rock the government, was dubbed 'Rywingate' and led to Miller's resignation in 2004.

Throughout the trial Rywin denied the charge maintaining he was set up by the newspaper, but his appeal was yesterday (20OCT05) quashed.
