It was the Stone Roses who were of course gaining the headlines in Heaton Park, Manchester over the weekend, but another icon of the north west's music scene managed to notch up a couple for himself too, former Oasis man Liam Gallagher appearing with his new band - largely featuring ex-Oasis alumni - Beady Eye as one of Saturday's support acts.
Gallagher's group have been going since 2009 so their appearance was not much of a talking point in itself; however, Saturday night marked the first time that the younger of the two famously quarrelling brothers had elected for the group to play Oasis songs written by Noel Gallagher. Gallagher had given prior warning of the decision earlier in the year, reports The Guardian, when he announced "I feel they're just as much my songs as they are Noel's. And if people don't like it, go to the bar or f**k off. If they do like it, jump up and down, let's have a good time".
The move came under criticism from fans on Twitter, causing the 39 year-old to angrily retort "Listen up squares we're playing them live not re-recording them so chill." So it was that during their set Beady Eye played 'Rock 'n' Roll Star' and 'Morning Glory' from his previous band's first two albums respectively. Older brother Noel Gallagher has regularly played Oasis tracks with his own band the High Flying Birds, but then many have reacted rather more positively to this, given that it was he who wrote them first time out.
