Little Big Town - Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman Founds Charity In Honour Of Late Relative
Little Big Town star Kimberly Schlapman has founded a new charity organisation in honour of her late brother-in-law.
The singer's relative, Thomas Allen Schlapman, was allegedly killed by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle in Tennessee on 21 November, 2012, leaving behind a wife and nine-year-old daughter.
And now she and her husband Stephen have launched the Dogwood Project charity and hopes to send a teddy bear, floral arrangement or Dogwood tree to all kids struggling through the grieving process of losing a parent.
She tells TasteofCountry.com, "The events of my brother-in-law's death are something that we could have never imagined. As I watched his daughter learn the news that her daddy had died, I wanted to take that excruciating pain and transfer it all to myself. A child should not have to grow up without a mother or daddy, but that is the devastating reality for some.
"The Dogwood Project will seek out and reach out to children like my niece and give them what might be their first glimpse of hope after the death and funeral of their loved one."
And the star's partner hopes to eventually expand the project to help fund grief counselling sessions for those in need: "Ultimately, we hope to expand beyond the initial expression of love and support to help ensure that each and every child has access to grief counselling so that they can learn how to envision and create a future without this person they so loved."
