Madonna is on course to land her seventh number one album in America after her new release Hard Candy scored first-day sales of 100,000 on Tuesday (29Apr08).
If she does, as expected, hit the top spot next week (07May08), she'll topple Mariah Carey, who has just claimed her second week at number one with her sixth chart-topping album E=MC2.
Barbra Streisand is the only female artist with more number ones - she has landed eight.
Madonna, Carey and Janet Jackson are all tied for the second most, with six apiece.
Madonna first hit the top of the U.S. album charts with Like a Virgin in 1984.
