Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire has been honoured in his native Wales with a lifetime honorary fellowship of Swansea University.

The A DESIGN FOR LIFE hitmaker was performing with his band at Swansea's Brangwyn Hall last night (07APR05) when the college's Vice Chancellor RICHARD B DAVIES arrived on stage to present the rocker with his fellowship.

Wire enthuses, "I never got a chance to receive my own degree as we were on tour at the time. This more than makes up for it - what a great way to start a gig."

Davies adds, "To present such a creative graduate of Swansea with an Honorary Fellowship is a genuine pleasure. Nicky has made an exceptional contribution to the world of music. The lyrics he writes for the band display a keen awareness of political history that has firm roots in Welsh radicalism.

"It is heartening to see that his studies at Swansea have remained with him and I wish him, and the rest of the band, continued success for the future."

Wire graduated from Swansea with a politics degree in 1990, but wasn't able to attend the ceremony.
