Boxer Manny Pacquiao has filed suit against fellow fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his trainer father, alleging his upcoming opponent defamed him by suggesting he used performance-enhancing drugs.
Pacquiao filed a lawsuit on Wednesday (30Dec09) in Las Vegas, naming the Mayweathers and boxing promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer as defendants.
In the suit, Pacquiao insists the Mayweathers’ claims that Pacquiao used performance-enhancing drugs, like steroids, are false and that they were made as an attempt to destroy his professional reputation.
Pacquiao is asking for damages in excess of $75,000 (£46,900), plus punitive damages.
Pacquiao and Mayweather were expected to meet in the ring on 13 March (10), but negotiations have stalled over demands by Mayweather for the fighters to have Olympic-standard blood testing.
Schaefer tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper that talks continue over a possible Pacquaio-Mayweather fight.
