Margot Robbie will join Will Smith in 'Focus'.

The Australian actress - who is best known for her lead role in short-lived TV series 'Pan Am' - will star alongside the Hollywood icon in the new heist thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, which is being directed by 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, centres on a con-man who falls in love with his young apprentice, however, he becomes distracted when his former lover reappears just as he's about to pull off a major heist in Buenos Aires.

Ficarra and Requa wrote the script with their 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' lead actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in mind to star in the film, but neither was available in time for filming.

Eventually, 'Twilight' actress Kristen Stewart and 'Argo' actor-and-director Ben Affleck came on board the project but both quit earlier this year.

Smith - who was recently seen alongside his son Jaden Smith in 'After Earth' - then took the male lead role in April.

It's thought Robbie fended off competition from Hollywood A-listers including 'My Week with Marilyn' star Michelle Williams and 'Bridesmaids' actress Rose Byrne to land the role.

The up-and-coming actress will next be seen starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.
