The annual bike race which inspired the 1950 Marlon Brando movie The Wild One is being scrapped - because it attracts too many Hell's Angels bikers.

The local council has decided the 4 July race, which lures thousands of biking enthusiasts to Hollister in San Francisco, is too costly to the police force.

The area's sheriff has slammed the occasion as "a dirty, rotten, stinking event".

However the town's mayor and Harley Davidson motorbike fanatic Robert Scattini has launched a campaign to save the rally saying, "Those bikers put Hollister on the map."
