Motown veteran Martha Reeves is thrilled to be competing in November's Detroit City Council election with just 17 other possible contenders, after fighting off competition from 120 other candidates.

The 64-year-old MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS star is keen to turn her Michigan hometown around and, once the excitement of getting a step further towards her political dream subsides, the DANCING IN THE STREET singer intends to step up policing in the edgy area.

She enthuses, "I want to jump around up in here, but we're in the VIP room and everyone is being very sophisticated.

"My biggest concern are the youths of the city. I want to see them have as much love as we received while creating the Motown sound.

"The policing needs to be there, and it needs to be visible."
