Legendary director Martin Scorsese has signed up to make an untitled documentary about the life of Beatles singer George Harrison, according to reports.

Hollywood trade paper Variety claims that the film is to be made in collaboration with Harrison's widow Olivia and materials from the family's extensive archive will be supplied.

Harrison's surviving bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are also expected to take part in the project.

"George Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper," Scorsese said.

The documentary is reported to chart Harrison's Beatles career as well as his later years which included successful solo efforts as well as work as a film producer with his company Handmade Films.

Beatles fans eager to see the film will have to wait a while, however, as it is thought that it will take several years to complete.

Interviews and early production are expected to begin later this year.
