Chinese singer/actress LIU XIAOQING is baffled by the furore over the casting of Chinese and Malaysian stars in the Japanese-set film Memoirs Of A Geisha.

The LITTLE FLOWERS star, 54, was shocked to learn the Rob Marshall film had been banned in China, supposedly because homegrown actresses Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li play Japanese Geishas.

In its defence, the film's stars have compared their portrayals to American actors playing real-life British or Japanese characters.

Xiaoqing says, "It's nothing to be concerned about. It's only acting."
