The Swimming Pools hitmaker's album, which was released a week earlier than expected, was streamed 9.6 million times across the world on Monday (16Mar15).

The rapper's latest offering, which debuted on iTunes and Google Play at the same time, smashed Spotify's global streaming record previously held by Michael Buble with his festive album, Christmas.

Anthony Tiffith, the chief executive officer of Lamar's Top Dawg Entertainment record label, announced the news in a post on Twitter.com, writing, "To Pimp a Butterfly was streamed 9.6m (million) times on the 1st day. New global record 4 the most streams in a single day worldwide by a new release".
