The business-end of the awards season is now well and truly underway, and the stars were out in force at Sunday's evening's Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles (15 January 2012). Big winners included silent-flick The Artist - which now looks certain for Oscar glory - and George Clooney's The Descendants. But who won the fashion war?

Actress Michelle Williams picked up the award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in 'My Week with Marilyn', but her Jason Wu gown certainly divided opinion. Joanna Sloame of the New York Daily News was impressed, saying, "the indie darling looks sensational", though TooFab.com said, "Some fashionistas who usually impress really disappointed - we're looking at you Michelle Williams and that blue velvet dress!". Actress Rooney Mara has been causing a stir throughout awards season with her gothic elegance, and she continued her fine-form at the Globes in a black Nina Ricci dress that she described to E! Online as being "comfortable and simple". Cathy Horyn of the New York Times generally praised the gown but suggested it could have been better, saying, "Though Rooney Mara was probably the most fashionable young woman on the carpet, with a black cut-out Nina Ricci dress and her sleek ponytail and minimal makeup, the dress also didn't fit her as well as it should have". Unfortunately for veteran actress Meryl Streep, she appeared on most of the 'Worst Dressed' lists after opting for a black cowboy-style shirt with lace detailing. The UK's Metro newspaper said, "Making less of a fashion impact was Meryl Streep, who looked slightly underdressed for the occasion", although the actress probably wasn't too worried after scooping the award for Best Actress.

Given the amount of elegant dresses passing along the red-carpet, there were a few accidents at the ceremony. Actor Michael Fassbender was mortified after stepping on Tilda Swinton's dress, while Madonna almost ripped Jessica Biel's gown by accidentally trampling on the back of it.
