British comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail has topped a fresh poll of cult movie classics - after the public answered the critics back.

In an original list put together last month (MAY03) by American magazine Entertainment Weekly, rock 'n' roll documentary spoof This Is Spinal Tap came top of the list.

But disagreeing readers of the publication have now compiled their own top 11 - with Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones' comedy emerging victorious.

Entertainment Weekly writers admit, "Omitting Grail was harder than cutting down the mightiest tree in the forest with... a herring! Though one of the funniest (and most quotable) movies ever made, it was a cultural phenomenon. A comedy classic, we thought, not cult classic. You disagreed."

The full list is as follows:

1. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL

2. A Clockwork Orange

3. Mommie Dearest

4. The Princess Bride

5. Swingers

6. UHF

7. VALLEY OF THE DOLLS

8. Fight Club

9. DEAD ALIVE AKA BRAINDEAD

10. BETTER OFF DEAD

11. Donnie Darko
