Monty Python's SPANISH INQUISITION skit has beaten THE DEAD PARROT and the MINISTRY OF SILLY WALKS sketches to become the British comedy troupe's best in a new American magazine survey.

Editors at Entertainment Weekly created the top 20 Python skits to mark the launch of musical SPAMALOT, which is based on the cult 1975 movie MONTY PYTHON + THE HOLY GRAIL.

And they picked the legendary comic torture sketch, in which Michael Palin plays a stupid monk, above many fans' top choices.

The majority of the picks come from the troupe's TV series MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS, which launched in Britain in 1969 and became a cult hit in the 1970s.

The top five sketches in the Entertainment Weekly poll are:

1. THE SPANISH INQUISITION

2. MINISTRY OF SILLY WALKS

3. GUY DE LOIMBARD'S (corr) CASTLE (from MONTY PYTHON + THE HOLY GRAIL)

4. DEAD PARROT SKETCH

5. THE FUNNIEST JOKE IN THE WORLD.
