Idris Elba has signed up to play Dr. Alex Cross in 'Cross'.

The '28 Days Later' actor will play the lead role in a new instalment of the murder mystery series, originally fronted by Morgan Freeman, who played the detective in 'Kiss the Girls' and 'Along Came A Spider'.

The story - adapted for the screen by Kerry Williamson and directed by David Twohy - tells the tale of Dr. Cross tracking a rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife many years ago.

'Cross' will be produced by the Lloyd Levin, Leopoldo Gout, Belle Avery and Steve Bowen, Deadline.com reports.

The movie will begin shooting in spring 2011.

British-born Elba is well known for acting for both TV and cinema, having had a successful run in 'The Wire' and UK drama 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency'.

He can next be seen in comic book-epic 'Thor' alongside Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
